Last year, I published this post about the “house that wasn’t.” I shared how we lost what felt like the perfect house and how heartbroken it felt after looking for so long and being outbid on four other houses. Well, we stayed put in our current home since then and just kept saving. We got through Madeline’s arrival and then that itch started.
First, I want to say I love our current home and that has been what made it so difficult to find another one. After building this place ourselves, I got pretty accustomed to getting everything I wanted in terms of design. And our kitchen…it is just perfect and finding a better one has proven really challenging.
Our house is not big enough, though. Corey works from home a lot of the time when he isn’t traveling. That coupled with baby girl being at home and the screaming, crying, and cooing that come with that and we really needed to be able to spread out a little more. Not to mention the baby paraphernalia that just keeps coming and we are out of storage. We also really wanted a backyard, which is not something we had any desire for when we arrived in Charlotte from Hoboken.
We asked our realtor to open our search back up and then ended up falling in love with a neighborhood we never even considered last year and a specific house in it. Financially, it was the best we’d seen for the money and less expensive than the house that wasn’t. Since we’ve been saving, saving, saving since then we’ve also finished paying off our cars and my student loan since the fall so lots of financial freedom was gained by waiting, even if it was heart breaking at the time.
It wasn’t the neighborhood we originally wanted but this neighborhood has a great community feel and looks so picture perfect. It’s also less than ten minutes from our current house, keeping us close to our favorite things and friends. Bonus for Corey is that it is much closer to his company’s new office when he has to go in and the airport. It’s also close to the country club we are considering joining so we can start moving forward with that process. Bring on the golf.
This house is a reminder that when one door closes, another will open when the time is right. This house has good bones and is in excellent condition but needs a lot of updating, so I will share that when the time comes. Meanwhile, we’ll be trying to pack up with a newborn in tow. While I return to work. Yes, we are crazy.
