Join me for Go Gray in May

Last month I shared a little about our family’s switch to safer personal care and household products. This month I am putting my money where my mouth is – literally – and donating 100% of my Beautycounter commission this month to the American Brain Tumor Association as part of Go Gray in May.

May is brain cancer awareness month and this is a cause that is near and dear to my heart as we lost my husband’s dad to a glioblastoma almost three years ago. This is a very aggressive type of cancer with most patients surviving less than a year, is very expensive to attempt to treat in the event that a loved one is diagnosed, and is critically underfunded.

I was personally introduced to Beautycounter about a year and a half ago when I was sent a little sample package and asked to review it on Instagram. I shared here that I tried to use safe products while I was pregnant but afterwards went righ back to my old ways. Not because I didn’t care but because I didn’t know better.

I thought that surely there was some government agency evaluating the products I was putting on my body – on my child’s body for safety. If something wasn’t safe for me to use, if it had a chemical with a defined link to infertility or hormone disruption, if it contained a known carcinogen then surely there was some law in our country that would keep it from being sold in our local Target. Right?

This video was shared with me with my Beautycounter samples and it really inspired me to dig a little deeper into the issue and what I learned was so scary. Chemicals linked to endocrine disruption, infertility, chronic disease, early puberty, and cancer are allowed to be used in products on the shelves in the stores in the United States. Even chemicals that are banned for use in other countries. They’re even allowed to be used in the diaper cream, baby wash, and kids shampoo we are using on our children. Some of the very items I had put on my baby registry from what I thought were trusted brands.

The only person evaluating the safety of the products you put on your body and your children’s bodies is YOU.

This month I will be sharing why choosing safe products matters, how you can check for safe ingredients when you’re shopping at the supermarket or purchasing beauty products at stores like Sephora or Ulta, and of course some of my favorites by Beautycounter.

I’ll be donating my commission at the end of the month to the National Brain Cancer Society but there are ways you can support this cause if you can’t or are not interested in making a purchase yourself.

1. Join the group page. You’ll learn a lot about choosing safe personal care products wherever you shop.

2. Invite your friends with an interest in health or who have small children to join if you think they might be interested. You’ll both have a chance to win some fun free products like our infamous sunscreen and charcoal cleansing bar.

I'm so sorry about your father-in-law. That's truly terrible. It's just so important that we know what we are putting into and onto our bodies. Who knows how many health problems are caused by this sort of thing. It's scary!Keep up the good work!-Kristen // http://www.pugsandpearls.com
